Students in the final year of the Primary Years Programme (PYP) at The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) participate in a culminating project known as the Exhibition. Students are required to engage in a collaborative trans-disciplinary inquiry process that involves them in identifying, investigating and offering solutions to real life issues or problems. And this year, the Grade 5 students have done an exemplary job of tackling inequality in the local context.
Students began by trying to understand what inequality means and where they might find it in the local community. This led to field trips, research into the basic needs for survival, watching documentaries, reading books and interacting with international agencies and advocacy groups working in the field.
Once the students began understanding what inequality was and how they could help in finding solutions to the problems, they began to come up with various initiatives including organising classes for deaf students, coaching cricket tutorials and bringing technology skills to street children through an after school activity.
As the culmination of this process, the students displayed their findings and what they plan to do in the Exhibition organised at the school. OSC sees the transition from the Primary Years Programme (PYP) to Middle Years Programme (MYP) as a movement that signifies a preadolescent’s coming of age.
