The Chitra Lane School recently celebrated 50 years of empowering and enriching thousands of children with special needs from across the island. The book, “The Chitra Lane Way” was launched amidst a gathering of eminent personalities, management of the school and children of Chitra Lane School. The book is a definitive guide to empower children with special needs in the island, which is more practical than scientific. The Chitra Lane School expects to open the eyes of the society through this book, to look at the capabilities and behaviour of children with special needs in a fresh way. The Chitra Lane Way charts the progressive approach of an organisation that has learned with trial and error, the way of reaching out to children with special needs and igniting their true potential. The school’s Consultant Psychologist, Nishalie Fernandopulle stated: “Our hope is that by sharing what we have learned with others, we will be able to empower many more children with special needs from across the island”.
Founded back in 1967 with just two students, the Chitra Lane School now provides services to around 200 children and young adults with special needs. This government approved charity organisation is dedicated to creating a better world for children with special needs and has been recognised as a centre of excellence as well. The organisation is doing its utmost to save children with special needs and their parents from social stereotypes and help them stand on their own feet just like any other child would.
