Founded in 1957, the Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) is Sri Lanka’s most well established and prestigious school. As of 2012, 18 percent of students attending OSC were Sri Lankan. An IB world school offering the full program to all students, OSC is fully accredited by three agencies from North America and Europe.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) is a rigorous pre-university course of studies, leading to external examinations that meet the needs of highly motivated secondary school students between the ages of 16 and 19 years. Designed as a comprehensive two-year curriculum that allows its graduates to fulfill requirements of various national education systems, the DP model is based on the pattern of no single country, but incorporates the best elements of many.
“The number of expatriate children attending international schools has not decreased, indeed there are many more,” says Nicholas Brummitt, Managing Director of the International School Consultancy Group. “But what has changed is the recognition by local families that international schools are a means of advancing to further education at some of the world’s best universities.”
The OSC International Baccalaureate Scholarship Programme provides a stimulating, academically challenging and holistic education that is aimed at developing the person in full. The prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma (www.ibo.org) is offered in over 132 countries and is the most sought-after qualification for students seeking admission at the best universities around the world. The Overseas School of Colombo has been offering the IB Diploma with great success for over 25 years.
The IB is widely recognised by Ministries of Education and universities around the world. The IB Diploma is extensively accepted in Europe, USA, Australia, New Zealand and India as a fully recognised university entrance qualification. In addition to the global acceptance, the status of IB Diploma is such that credits are often granted to IB students for the first year courses.
OSC students have gained admission into top colleges and universities worldwide, such as Australian National University and Monash University in Australia, McGill University and University of Toronto in Canada, London School of Economics, University of Nottingham, and University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, Johns Hopkins University, University of California-Berkley, University of Pennsylvania, Stanford University and University of Chicago in the United States of America, and other recognised institutions in over 15 countries.
The scholarship is open to highly gifted and motivated students of Sri Lankan nationality, who are currently not at OSC, and have completed their local or London O/levels by December 2012.
