The thirteenth edition of the vibrant painting exhibition series Colorful Harmony will take place at the JDA Perera Art Gallery in Colombo. This captivating exhibition features the works of renowned Sri Lankan artist and instructor R. Kouwshigan and his talented students from Sri Lanka and India.
Joining Kouwshigan in this creative showcase are artists S. Dhakshana Sai, Linisha Mohanaraja, Kavinayaa Sriharan, Anrini Priyambada Dutta, Ashani Kring, J. Senthamarai, and Piyakthie Denesh Kanna. Together, they present a collection of around 50 artworks that span a wide range of themes—from the serene beauty of nature and wildlife to powerful portraits, spiritual imagery, raw human emotion, and bold, abstract creations.
The exhibition invites visitors into a world of colorful harmony, where diverse artistic styles come together to inspire and engage. Whether you’re a seasoned art enthusiast or a casual admirer, this event promises something special for everyone.
R. Kouwshigan’s journey in art began at just seven years old. A self-taught artist, he launched his career in the 1980s as a cartoonist and illustrator for the Tamil newspapers Chinthamani and Thinapathi. Over the years, his passion led him to explore a variety of styles and mediums, including canvas painting, 3D murals, Tanjore painting, glasswork, metal embossing, and digital art. In recognition of his lifelong dedication, he received the ‘Kalai Chudar’ (Light of Art) state award in 2019 from the Department of Hindu Religious and Cultural Affairs.
Since 2003, Kouwshigan has held twelve group exhibitions with his students, including the landmark Bonding Colors in 2018 at the Society of Visual Arts and Design (SVAD) in Santiniketan, India—where he and his students made history as the first Sri Lankans to exhibit together at this iconic venue.
This year’s exhibition brings something new and exciting to the table. Kouwshigan will unveil a series of paintings created with the help of artificial intelligence, then transferred onto handmade canvase s—blending technology with traditional art. He also introduces a new feature: Bottle Art. This innovative form transforms ordinary glass bottles into unique decorative pieces using painting, crafting, and creative design techniques.
