The Board of Trustees of the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind, responsible for the management, funding and operation of the School for the Blind Ratmalana, School for the Deaf Ratmalana and the Nuffield School for the Deaf and Blind Kaithady, Jaffna, accepted a proposal by Hemas Hospitals (HHPL) for the purpose of building a 50-bed hospital for the middle-income earners. The Board of Trustees accepted the proposal to lease the land to HHPL for 30 years, subject to obtaining court approval for lease of trust property following three months of detailed negotiations. Apart from substantial cash inflow to the schools the Board has recognised the benefits to the schools and the local community in establishing an affordable hospital as well as the fact that a hospital fits into the overall strategy and model of the schools as a centre for healing. The Board also realises other benefits to the schools from the CSR activities of the hospital.
