Celebrating one year in operations this September, Mas Villa is a serene but stunning Boutique Villa located less than an hour’s drive from Kandy. It is a magnificent 350-year-old property built on a verdant hillside that overlooks the Kotmale Reservoir and jungle-clad mountains that rear up behind it. Conveniently located a few kilometres off the main Kandy–Nuwara Eliya highway in the historic Valley of the Kings, it is an ideal location for exploring the hill country of Sri Lanka. The ancestral house of a well-known family, Mas Villa, formerly known as “Pahala Walauwwa”, is a grand house with a grand history. In remodeling the house into a Boutique Villa, the owners were very careful to retain the form and essence of the ancestral house which include its verandahs, courtyard and even the “atuwa” (granary) while adding all modern conveniences.
The Villa has five bedrooms that encircle a serene open air courtyard enhanced by tranquil fish ponds. Spacious living areas – a sitting room, a TV / Games Room with a pool table and an elegant dining room – also encircle this sociable open-air space whilst the first floor of the building is taken up by a spacious double suite which overlooks the lake and surrounding countryside. The swimming pool also enjoys an uninterrupted view of the valley and lake.
Though already functioning as a hotel, life at the villa is informal, relaxed, and very flexible. There are plenty of things to do and see in and around this historic valley. Swimming, fishing and boating in the reservoir or just strolling through the wooded reservation full of exotic flora and fauna are among the favorite pastimes of guests staying at the Villa. Furthermore, free mountain bikes and guided walking tours are an invitation for the guests to explore the villages as well as tea fields on ancient granite footpaths that are still in use.
Mas Villa’s experienced chefs have created an enticing range of signature dishes using the fresh organic produce sourced mainly from the Villa’s own vegetable plots, fish from the nearby lake as well as fruits and sap from trees in the property.
The inspiration for the name “Mas Villa” derives from “Maswella”, the tiny hamlet in Kotmale where the villa is located. Kotmale is rarely cited as a tourist destination but it offers a variety of interesting sites for the avid explorer. Nature lovers can discover the waterfalls of Gerandi Ella, Ramboda Ella or view the Kotmale Reservoir which are all situated in the vicinity of the Villa. As the “Valley of the Kings”, Kotmale offered refuge to King Dutugemunu and King Sri Wickrema Rajasinghe. Kotmale is also famed for its historic temples from the glorious Pusulpitiya Temple to the magnificent Kotmale Maha Seya, which once complete will be the tallest Stupa in the country next to Ruwanweliseya.
To celebrate its one year in operation, Mas Villa is offering a special promotion for the months of September and October where they are inviting guests to enjoy three nights (on Bed and Breakfast basis) in any category room for the price of two nights.
