The major reconstruction projects that are currently underway at Mount Lavinia Hotel have resulted in the resurfacing of ruins of historical edifices underneath the hotel premises.
The ruins of a grand old dame, including bricks or mortar used to build the edifice have been uncovered and fissures of ordinary limestone formations were discovered as constructions of the service elevator shaft for the Governor’s Restaurant were commencing.
One of the engineers stated that Mount Lavinia or the Governor’s palace was built on a rocky promontory and parts of the rock were also found among other ruins that have resurfaced.
Recognised today as an iconic heritage hotel, MLH boasts of the beauty that surrounds and the love and romance that is rainbowed over the property. Applying these building material sleuthing to this magnificent mansion built in 1805, has helped confirm that the former palace of the Governor was built on a rock with the sweat and toil
of British reign.
