La Maison de Colombo is where timeless French elegance meets the warmth and charm of Sri Lanka. It’s an experience that must be seen to be believed. Step through its doors to be transported to a world of refined beauty, where every detail tells a story.

Words Jennifer Paldano Goonewardane.

La Maison de Colombo is nothing short of enchanting. It’s hard to believe that this hidden oasis is nestled down a quiet by-road on Stratford Avenue—a boutique haven with just seven exquisitely designed rooms, offering guests an immersive experience of beauty, charm, and understated luxury. From the very first glance, the hotel’s architectural brilliance captivates, with graceful staircases, airy corridors, and serene patios that define its elegant form.

La Maison de Colombo is the inspired creation of Frenchmen Christophe Coucaud and Pascal Gavotto, whose journey to Sri Lanka began with a deep fascination for the island’s tropical allure. Enchanted by its warmth, culture, and natural beauty, they envisioned more than just a hotel—they dreamed of a sanctuary where French sophistication and Sri Lankan soul would harmoniously blend. The result is a boutique hideaway that offers an experience of hospitality as rich and nuanced as the cultures it unites—elegant, authentic, and truly unforgettable.

Every hotel area is tastefully appointed, radiating refinement, comfort, and timeless style. But La Maison De Colombo is more than a beautiful space—it’s a sensorial journey. Whether in the restaurant, relaxing in the intimate ‘Library’ lounge, or unwinding in your room, the ambiance is unique: a perfect balance of relaxed sophistication and heartfelt warmth that makes every moment feel like home, only better.

La Maison de Colombo is a true testament to authenticity, a sentiment echoed by Christophe Coucaud, the hotel’s Director, who takes genuine pride in delivering a generous dose of French hospitality. For him, it’s more than a service—a philosophy rooted in warmth, respect, and heartfelt care. Every guest is welcomed as a visitor and as part of a story steeped in elegance and sincerity.

La Maison offers four distinct experiences that are thoughtfully curated. On top are its classic and premium double rooms and a stunning luxury suite—all designed in harmony with French culture and elegance.

Each space celebrates refined minimalism, where soft hues, tasteful décor, and handcrafted Sri Lankan furniture create a serene, luxurious atmosphere. The rooms carry evocative names like Les Créateurs, a nod to France’s fashion legacy; Les Écrivains, honoring writers; Les Peintres, paying tribute to painters; and Les Artistes, inspired by performers and singers. Subtle art décor and themed accents bring each concept to life, making every room a visual and sensory delight.

The crown jewel is the Les Écrivains suite—a literary dreamscape with room for four, a stunning carved mirror, a world-class Jacuzzi, and amenities that make it feel like a private retreat. Like the rest of the property, it’s bathed in a palette of white with soft touches of green, purple, pink, blue, and burgundy, drawing inspiration from the timeless interiors of French castles. Three premium rooms open out to the tranquil pool, adding another layer of charm to this unique boutique escape.

Welcome to timeless elegance – The entrance to La Maison de Colombo.

Every corner brims with captivating character, inviting you to explore the enchanting details that define this space.

Where water lilies bloom, serenity follows.

The second highlight is the intimate restaurant, seating just twenty-six, with a patio overlooking a lush garden filled with birdsong. Nearby, the secret garden—an open-air nook for twelve— offers a romantic, tucked-away dining experience.

Focused on quality over quantity, the kitchen upholds the highest standards of hygiene and care. At La Maison de Colombo, each day begins with the charm of a traditional French breakfast. As the day unfolds, the kitchen comes alive with rich, soulful flavours for lunch and dinner – classic French dishes with a modern twist. And, of course, their elegant and indulgent desserts are hard to resist.

Ceylon Tea offers a nod to the island, blending local charm with French finesse. Whether dropping by for coffee or reserving dinner under the stars, guests are invited to relax and indulge in this thoughtfully curated culinary escape.

The lounge, affectionately known as The Library, is infused with the subtle fragrance of lemon and thyme, setting the perfect ambiance for relaxed moments—perhaps with a book on French castles or the vibrancy of Paris.

One of its most delightful features is the French Boutique, a curated collection of treasures from France: cherries steeped in kirsch, Dijon mustard, artisanal biscuits, and sweets, fine cutlery crafted by the makers for the French presidential palace, and thoughtful gifts—all proudly made in France.

A corner dedicated to Sri Lankan mementos and souvenirs will soon follow. Tastefully decorated and airy, the lounge invites you to unwind comfortably—whether browsing, daydreaming, or letting time slip by after a satisfying meal.

The fourth experience at La Maison is its bar—a stylishly appointed space where minimalist elegance meets old- world charm, bathed in natural light. It’s the only place in the country where you can sip Bollinger Champagne, the royal favorite famously enjoyed by James Bond himself.

This laidback yet refined retreat offers a curated selection of exquisite and exclusive beverages, with a special tribute to the finest brews crafted in France. Whether you’re toasting to the moment or unwinding in quiet luxury, the bar at La Maison invites you to drink in style.

La Maison’s authentic charm draws a diverse crowd—from business professionals and well-traveled locals seeking refined European flavors to vacationers and expatriates in Colombo seeking a culinary experience that feels both familiar and exceptional. Yet La Maison welcomes all who wish to taste the French palate, nestled within a serene setting of graceful architecture and timeless charm.

Whether you’re savoring a quiet moment or celebrating a special occasion, La Maison De Colombo invites you to indulge in a truly unique fusion of cultures—French flair and Sri Lankan soul.
