Architect and Designer Tilak Samarawickrema has compiled an autobiography of his years in design and architecture, titled ‘A Voyage in Sri Lankan Design’.
The book features a selection of articles written by a range of diverse authors who vividly capture the nuances of Samarawickrema’s work and his contribution to the fields of design and architecture, globally as well as within Sri Lanka. Samarawickrema’s journey in design is traced from his inspiration by Ananda Coomaraswamy, to his sojourn in Italy and his immense contribution at the National Design Centre in Sri Lanka. The articles are complemented by images of the varied works of art, design and architecture of Samarawickrema and his team.
Speaking at the book launch of ‘A Voyage in Sri Lankan Design’, publisher Vijitha Yapa said “i’m glad that we were able to publish this book because I think its going to be very important, not simply for Tilak but also for Sri Lanka. Because it outlines what our traditions are, it outlines the new developments that are taking place, as far as design is concerned.”
Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Minister of International Monetary Co-operation and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, introducing the book said, “Tilak has been able to utilise his existing skills to create something of great value and taste. It’s a great offering, at present when our country is gaining recognition around the world. This book will provide a very good historical background and show the potential of this country to visitors.”
