Usha de Silva won the ladies’ category and Lalith Rohitha won the men’s Group A (Handicap 0-12) category of the Mercedes Trophy, which was held in Sri Lanka for the 20th consecutive year. Sponsored by DIMO, this tournament brought together Sri Lanka’s top golfing community to the Victoria Golf Club, which organised the event. E C Gunarathne won the Group B (Handicap 13-20) category, while Dharshan de Silva won the Group C (Handicap 21-24) category.
Participation was limited only to owners of Mercedes-Benz, Jeep and Chrysler vehicles. The winners of the trophy will move on to the Mercedes Trophy Asian Finals and if successful, will further compete in the World Finals in Germany.
Within the past 19 years, more than 120 golfers from Sri Lanka have taken part in the Asian Finals, while 20 of these golfers have been eligible for the world finals. Three of our golfers have been successful on reaching the pinnacle of the Mercedes Trophy by becoming winners.
This year too there was a participation of over 80 golfers at the event. Six of these golfers were selected to participate in the Asian Golf Championship, which is to be held in Brisbane, Australia later this year. One golfer from the ladies’ category qualified for the ladies’ Asian Championship.
