SOSL Resident Conductor Dushyanthi Perera guides the JSO through an intensive rehearsal session.
The Junior Symphony Orchestra JSO of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka SOSL will present an exciting concert, conducted by SOSL Resident Conductor Dushyanthi Perera, who has trained the young musicians over many months along with the support of the SOSL Brass leader, Naveen Fernando. The JSO comprises students aged 10 to 25 from schools in and around Colombo, though students also come from Gampaha and Negombo. The JSO includes many university students from Colombo and Kelaniya, as well as from the Performing Arts University.
Designed to showcase the enthusiasm, talent, and developing musicianship of the orchestra’s young performers, the program offers an engaging selection of much-loved orchestral works, ranging from the elegance of the Romantic era to vibrant marches, dances, and popular Latin American rhythms.
The concert program will include Schubert’s lively Rosamunde Overture and Tchaikovsky’s stirring Themes from March Slav.
The program continues with two of Brahms’s most familiar and infectious Hungarian Dances – Nos. 1 and 5, before moving to the dramatic and triumphant fourth movement of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.”
Adding further color and excitement will be Saint-Saëns’ sensuous and energetic Bacchanale, followed by Elgar’s majestic Pomp and Circumstance March No. 4.
The concert program adds a lighter, distinctly Latin American note with two celebrated tangos, El Choclo and La Cumparsita, both energetic and festive works. For the young musicians of the JSO, the concert represents more than an opportunity to perform some of the great works of the orchestral repertoire.
It is a valuable platform for developing confidence, discipline, and ensemble skills while experiencing the excitement of performing before a live audience.
Under the leadership of Dushyanthi Perera, the orchestra looks forward to sharing a program that is both accessible and entertaining, offering audiences an opportunity to encourage and celebrate the next generation of young Sri Lankan musicians.
