House Vandervort reflects colonial charm and provides a unique dining experience.

Amidst the high-rise apartment buildings in a residential area in Dehiwala, a quaint colonial property provides a refreshing sense of calm. House Vandervort offers a beautiful experience of delicious cuisine, beverages, and music within a pleasing and elegant environment.

Words: Udeshi Amarasinghe.

Photographs: Menaka Aravinda.

Exuding a charming colonial persona, House Vandervort is a former residential property believed to have been built in the 1930s. Upon entering, you are immediately immersed in a feeling of serenity. Reflecting the Dutch heritage, House Vandervort adopted the colors as well as interior furnishing to respect the culture. Intricately carved wooden panels with floral motifs and timber finishing add a richness and warmth to the property. The original building itself was not altered, with many of the walls retained. The large main hall was converted into the restaurant that extends towards the kitchen and the action within can be seen.

The Pub on the first floor.

The two private dining rooms are known as the Long Room and the Family Room. The lighting, timber furniture, as well as the historical photographs and paintings, throughout the property, complement the elegance of the interiors. The cuisine at House Vandervort includes Western, fusion, Japanese, Indian and seafood specials. While various types of beverages are served at the restaurant and café.

The Pub on the first floor is reminiscent of an English pub with wooden barrels as tables. The bar is in rich dark timber with flat screens displaying sports. The Beer Garden and Billiards Room are on the rooftop. The latest matches are shown on large screens at the Beer Garden.

House Vandervort provides the private dining rooms for special occasions as well. The restaurant is for the family to engage in a relaxing and pleasant time. Take away, and delivery options are also available.

The latest venture by the Sinhara Group, House Vandervort provides a unique experience to guests in the suburbs of Colombo.

The veranda is ideal to enjoy a relaxing evening.
