Sri Lanka’s vehicle insurance industry has taken a significant step toward digital transformation with the launch of a nationwide digital insurance verification platform, eliminating the long-standing requirement for motorists to carry a physical insurance certificate. Motorists can verify the validity of their vehicle insurance by dialing *1338# from any mobile phone or by sending an SMS with the vehicle registration number. The new service offers greater convenience and peace of mind, allowing motorists to access insurance information anytime and anywhere without the need to carry or safeguard a plastic insurance card.
The landmark initiative was designed and developed by HUTCH Enterprise in collaboration with the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (IRCSL), the Insurance Association of Sri Lanka (IASL), all general insurance companies, telecommunications operators, and technology partners. The initiative aims to enhance national productivity by reducing administrative burdens, minimizing commuter inconvenience, improving accessibility, and supporting environmental sustainability by eliminating plastic insurance cards.
The digital platform enables real-time verification of vehicle insurance information for motorists, law enforcement authorities, and other authorized users across all mobile networks. By providing instant access to insurance status, the solution is expected to strengthen regulatory compliance, support road safety initiatives, expedite verification, and help mitigate insurance-related fraud and misuse.
As the trusted digital transformation partner powering the nationwide insurance verification ecosystem, HUTCH continues to demonstrate its commitment to advancing Sri Lanka’s digital agenda by delivering practical, scalable enterprise solutions that address real-world challenges. The initiative underscores HUTCH Enterprise’s growing role in enabling digital transformation across industries and in supporting more efficient public- and private-sector service delivery.
As Sri Lanka advances toward its aspiration to build a USD 15 billion digital economy by 2030, HUTCH remains focused on developing innovative digital solutions that enhance accessibility, productivity, and service excellence, thereby contributing meaningfully to the country’s broader economic and digital transformation.
