The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) hosted to two very significant and diverse events in the schools calendar during March. From March 1-3, OSC hosted the 19th session of the Colombo Operated Model United Nations (COMUN), which drew in participation from 27 schools within Sri Lanka and two from Cambodia and Pakistan.
The COMUN was an initiative of OSC in 1994, and what started out with four schools has grown to its current status, drawing in almost 400 students as delegates and administrators simulating the inner workings of the United Nations and its Councils. The student delegates become true ambassadors of their selected country, learning and arguing their foreign policies in line with the current world situation.
‘Conflict and Crisis’ was the theme of this year’s conference and drew attention to the Syrian crisis, European economic crisis and other relevant topics. The Chief Guest at the event was Sarath N Silva PC, who gave a very relevant speech and set the mood for the event.
March 8-10 saw an event of a very different nature – the South Asia Inter School Association (SAISA) Track and Field competition, which was held at OSC. Over 150 visiting athletes and 20 coaches representing seven schools across India, Pakistan, Nepal, Oman and Bangladesh competed in running, long jump, high jump, putt shot and discus events across six different age groups.
The event was an excellent representation of international camaraderie, sportsmanship, excitement and energy, and the sudden rains could not dampen these athletes’ spirit.
