Enjoy splendid views of the ocean and gleaming pool

Just a few steps away from the turquoise waters of Unawatuna, lies the Thaproban Pavilion Waves, a luxury retreat for a mesmerizing getaway in paradise.

Words Darrshini Parthepan

Inspired by opulent touches of colonial Dutch architecture, the brick orange edifice dwarfs the skyline. One first enters the magnificent lobby, which entices the visitors to the constant murmur of the tossing waves. Low roofs, timber staircases and simple motifs charismatically embody the island’s colonial legacy. The design of each space resembles waves, keeping in line with the name and theme of the hotel. The structure of the hotel also features environmentally friendly initiatives.

The restaurant can accommodate 80 diners and serves both Sri Lankan and international cuisines. Guests can revel in mouthwatering fresh seafood, which are prepared from the day’s catch. It is the fresh seafood and tantalizing flavour that make the hotel’s cuisine special. Buffet and à la carte menu are available for guests to enjoy, while theme nights such as Sri Lankan night and BBQs provide a diverse selection of meals. The chic restaurant with rustic furniture complemented with bright lighting opens out from one side to the gleaming infinity pool and from the other side, the beach. Water cascades down the tall glass walls of one side of the restaurant creating an almost dramatic effect. One can enjoy a romantic dinner near the pool under the twinkling stars while overlooking the serenity of the ocean. Take part in traditional Sri Lankan cooking lessons that promise an authentic experience.

Spend a relaxing evening by the poolside bar

The bedrooms consist of Wave Queen, Wave King and Wave Suites. The suites are spacious and decorated elegantly with attached bathrooms and  a jacuzzi. The rooms are spacious and comfortable, each complete with contemporary amenities such as TV, a mini bar and tea/coffee making facilities. All 51 rooms are charmingly designed and are reminiscent of waves, the theme of the hotel. The rooms face the ocean and offer stunning views. At the hotel, one can fall asleep to the sounds of waves crashing and wake up to a swirly cotton-candy sunrise.

The poolside bar is similar to a glass cube with one side open to the pool. This is an ideal place to unwind and bask in the sunshine while sipping a tropical beverage. The rooftop bar makes the perfect setting for guests to enjoy calming seascapes as they sample a variety of cocktails and mocktails. The aquamarine waters allure one to take a leisurely dip in the spectacular natural seawater pool curved around the base of a cliff on the sea front. From the rock cliffs you can catch a glimpse of vibrant peacocks strutting around.

The Kids’ Corner features plenty of indoor games and eye-catching toys. The hotel is designed such that serene sights of the Unawatuna beach could be enjoyed from all its spaces. Take a soothing yoga session on the rooftop which brings your soul and body a sense of sheer relaxation amidst the panoramic vistas of the ocean. A tranquil oasis, the spa offers a rejuvenating experience with traditional Sri Lankan Ayurveda treatments and modern healing techniques. As the sun dipped into the ocean, with a refreshed mind we bid adieu to this blissful beach paradise. A holiday at the Thaproban Pavilion Waves will be a memorable and tropical escapade.
