The Institute for the Hearing and Sight Impaired (formerly the Ceylon School for the Deaf and Blind) is both a school and a home to 600 students who are either hearing or sight impaired. The Institute looks after these special people, providing them with accommodation, food and education. Apart from being taught the national curriculum up to the G.C.E. O/L standard, they are also taught a vocation that will help them find employment when they leave. The Institute runs three residential schools – two at Ratmalana and a third in Jaffna.
The Hilton Colombo has been partnering with the schools through their CSR program for the past four years. The ‘Blue Energy Community Team’ that drives the hotel’s CSR project took the initiative and renovated the sick room at the School for Hearing Impaired at Ratmalana. The Hilton Colombo staff, including the management team, was personally involved in the renovation work.
General Manager Rudolf Troestler said “it was a privilege to help the school and we made it a special day by doing some fun activities with the kids during their interval.”
This CSR initiative by Hilton Colombo was in celebration of 25 years of service excellence in
Sri Lanka.
