St Mary’s Vidyalaya, Mattakkuliya experienced catastrophic damages when the tsunami hit Sri Lanka as a result of its close proximity to the sea. The school buildings were destroyed and certain buildings of the school had to be demolished and newly built.
Through the generous donations of the Government of Slovenia beginning in 2007, and the partnership of the Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka, the school re-opened with the presence of the Ambassador of Slovenia and Madam Janez Premoze, Honorary Consul of Slovenia in Sri Lanka, Sanath Ukwatte, Chairman – Mount Lavinia Hotel and Milinda Moragoda, current Opposition Leader – Colombo Municipal Council who was the chief guest at this event. The support by a consortium of donors from the Republic of Slovenia, including the Slovenian Red Cross, Caritas Slovenia and Slovenia’s foundation for UNICEF and the collaborative efforts with the Republic of Finland, have been greatly appreciated by the school and have significantly improved the students’ quality of life.
